You couldn’t miss the Impreza WRX STI when it was growing up in the 90s. As the car that made it onto the world rally stage, Subaru owes a lot to this brilliant car and legends like McRae & Burns. The fact that you could walk into a Subaru showroom and buy a version of the car you watched dominate the world’s toughest rally stages was a petrolhead’s dream!
In the midst of the “classic” era, Subaru created the Type R. Exclusively for the Japanese domestic market, these were based on a two-door coupé body and were available in four generations. This Type R was produced over a period of just 11 months and is therefore considered a coveted collector’s model. Equipped with the legendary EJ20, it has 280 hp and is still a fast car today, especially considering its low weight. Imagine what it would have felt like to speed through the streets or winding mountain roads of Japan in 1998! When driving from A to B, it’s a real scream that always tempts you to step on the gas even more. The power delivery is pleasingly old-fashioned, although there is some lag if you’re stuck in the wrong gear, the punch when the turbo engages is addictive and happily revs up to the glorious rev limit of 7,900 rpm.
Its appearance is strongly reminiscent of the 90s; pink STI emblem, large spoiler, “Get out of my way” hat and air vents on the hood, discreet rims and fantastically eye-catching WRX stickers … Perfect! Take a seat on the red, black and gray patterned STI seats and immerse yourself in a time capsule of rally fan heaven.
