Honda, the world’s largest engine manufacturer, still builds cars that go beyond mere transportation. The exotic youngtimer is available for little money and embodies Honda’s high-rev philosophy – the coupe produces 140 kW/190 hp from 1.8 liters and impresses with the variable camshaft adjustment (V-TEC) once invented by Honda designer Kenichi Nagahiro, with which the Japanese helped system-dependent low-displacement engines to gain power.
The two-door model with the strikingly elongated taillights stands out in traffic – firstly, of course, because it looks different from the average car, and secondly, because it is usually never seen on the road. But when you do see him, he stands out. And you can usually hear it, too.
Because if you want to achieve the factory-specified 6.7 seconds for the sprint from 0 to highway speed, you have to let the high-revving four-valve engine really rev. The red zone only starts at around 8,300 rpm, and beyond the 5,000 rpm line, you even feel a second wind in this Integra, namely when the intelligent camshaft (V-TEC) adjusts the timing.However, that doesn’t mean that nothing happens below this mark. Because with an unladen mass of 1.2 tons, the front-wheel-drive sports car is so light that the machine handles it quite playfully and already offers respectable thrust underneath.
